Astro’s Playroom has always been the PS5’s best friend, as it is a free demo of what the console and its controller are capable of. What took everyone off guard back when the PS5 was released, however, is that the silly little tech demo inside the console was actually a banger of a game.

Astro Bot is a 2024 platform game developed by Team Asobi and published by Sony Interactive Entertainment for the PlayStation 5 to coincide with PlayStation’s 30th anniversary. Following Astro’s Playroom (2020), it is the fifth overall installment in the Astro Bot series and marks Team Asobi’s first game developed since its separation from Japan Studio. Astro’s Playroom was the final game released by Japan Studio before their dissolution in April 2021.

This refers to Jin Sakai and the tree in his childhood home, as seen in 2020’s Ghost of Tsushima on PS4, developed by Sucker Punch. Ghost of Tsushima was the last first-party PlayStation game developed exclusively for the PS4, after which the PS5 released. The Access Controller is the first PlayStation controller designed to accommodate for the needs of various disabilities, allowing disabled gamers to play with greater ease. It includes multiple different stick caps, buttons with swappable tags, industry-standard AUX ports to connect other accessibility devices, and supports up to 30 different profiles. It can also be paired with a second Access Controller and a DualSense, which can all act as a single controller input.

Artifact 2/3 “Playstation Portable” – After riding the rotating platform, there is a switch on the other side which creates a lily pad platform back to the right.

At this point, you should have finished all levels and maybe got some miscellaneous trophies. A lot of these trophies will have you interact with an object in the PlayStation Labo. The levels are very short so it’s not too bad if you missed something. First of all, enjoy this small game and play through the short levels and have fun with the loveable Astro Bots doing their thing. Play through all 16 levels and collect 2 Artifacts and 4 Puzzle Pieces in each of the sub-levels. I recommend you start with Cooling Springs, this is a nice introduction to the game.

It deserves a place among the greats though – Astro’s Playroom has the coherence, character and abundance of ideas, executed with real clarity, of the very best platformers. Astro’s Playroom first launched in 2020 as a pre-installed PS5 exclusive that highlighted the DualSense controller’s features. The platformer also paved the way for the successful Astro Bot, Team Asobi’s hit game from 2024 that earned numerous Game of The Year awards.

When one hits you, Astro will be reset to the last checkpoint, and Selene’s capsule will open. These four bots are completely optional, so if you don’t have the time (or the storage space to redownload Astro’s Playroom), know that they won’t give you much of an advantage in Astro Bot. And yet, even when Astro is pulling off his most basic moves in familiar environments, this game feels revelatory. The PS5’s new controller combines a built-in speaker with vibrating haptics to make interacting with the world feel like it’s literally happening in your hand.

The DualShock 3 was preceded by the original SIXAXIS controller, which lacked rumble motors and had a slightly transparent plastic shell. Because of this, early PS3 games lacked rumble, but several were retroactively patched to support the feature. The DualShock 3 released exactly one year after the PS3’s launch date.

Its sequel, Miles Morales, would be a launch title alongside Astro’s Playroom. Despite looking like a handheld, the PlayStation Portal doesn’t run games by itself. Instead it’s used to connect to a PlayStation 5 and play compatible games via Remote Play (a feature that dates back to the PlayStation Vita playing PS3 games).

Categories range from story completion to collectibles and challenges‚ with some being secret trophies. Earning the Platinum Trophy in Astro Playroom requires unlocking all 46 trophies. With no missable achievements‚ it’s achievable in 5-7 hours‚ making it a fun and accessible platinum. Now, you want to head to the opposite side of the beach, where there are structures in the sand of the four face buttons of the PlayStation controller.
